2 GO LOW IN WET HARRIS TEETER EVENT AT LONGLEAF
Posted: 8/14/2009 9:49:17 AM
Pinehurst, NC (August 13, 2009) - Joe Prairie of Asheboro and Jim Gregory of Lexington posted exceptional scores for their respective flights in very wet conditions during the Harris Teeter Senior Amateur Tour event held at The Club at Longleaf today. The round, which started in a steady light rain, never saw weather conditions improve throughout the day. If anything the rain intensified during the competition, making scoring all the more difficult. In light of this fact, if Prairie's round of 77 in the B Flight, by far his lowest score of the year, was pretty remarkable, then Gregory's 72 in the A Flight was downright amazing. Gregory "lapped the field" with a very comfortable 6 stroke margin of victory over Fayetteville's David Teal and Wiley Barrett of Southern Pines. His round was highlighted by 5 birdies. Prairie meanwhile needed every putt he made as he nipped Raleigh's Lee Booker by a single stroke. In the Championship Flight Brent Massey of Zebulon topped Pittsboro's Tom Yamashita by 3 strokes with a 76. (The Championship played from the 6,600 yard Blue Tees, while all the other flights played from the Whites at 6,096 yards). Advance's Ron Alligood and Charlie Williams of Autryville finished the round tied for the C Flight lead with 87s. Williams emerged as the scorecard playoff winner as neither player wanted to go back to the wet conditions to play it out on the course as is the Tour rule for 1st place ties. "I think it was reasonable to make this decision, seeing as both guys were soaked", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.
