Champ & A flight Blue Tees (6446 yards) B & C White Tees (6150 yards) these holes play Blue Tees (#3, #4, #7, #12, and 17) Championship Flight: The day started with a little rain and some thunder but after the skies cleared the big storm was on the course. Instead of lighting and thunder we had birdies flying around everywhere. Richard Krapfel led the way with 7 birdies on the day but followed by Mark Wagner and John Walters who had six each. Walters was even more impressive since he got his first birdie on the par 3 ninth hole then reeled off 5 birdies on the back nine which included birding his last 3 holes. Craig Sturdivant turned at 2 under par 34 on his front nine while Mark Wagner and Richard Krapfel were right on his heals with 35’s. The back nine saw Wagner’s putter heat up even more. With three birdies on the back against no bogies for 33 given him a four under par 68 for the victory. Wagner birdied his final hole the par 5 18th to secure the victory by one shot over Craig Sturdivant who shot a 3 under par 69. John Walters captured third but did so in dramatic fashion firing a 4 under par 32 on the back side which included five birdies against one bogie. Ken Powers grab fourth place money with an even par 72, and Richard Krapfel got 5th place with 73. When Richard finished he said his last 6 holes were like a phone number (366-4424) now he just needed to know what his area code was…Also Richard noted that it was the first time he can ever remember birding 7 holes and not shooting under par. A Flight: Tom Carbone won for the first time all season with a consistent round of 76. Terry Lewis extended his A flight points lead with a second place finish of 79. Steve Romito grabbed third with an 80 while Russ Priddy and Bob Boettner tied for 4th place with 85’s B Flight: The low scores and birdie barrage put on by Champ Flight was great but paired in comparison to something that has never happened on the Senior Amateur Tour. I called all my other tour directors around the country to verify and no one had ever had this happen. Tour veteran John Love showed up at Rock Barn nice and early to get ready for the tourney and hit some range balls, however when John opened his trunk he realized he had left his clubs at home. Dejected as he could be he walked up to me and said he would have to drop out given he had no clubs. Immediately I said no way and offered him mine. That did not work either so I asked the head pro inside if he had rental clubs which he did. With that I convinced John to play and gave him golf balls, gloves, tees ball markers etc.. So he could compete and have a fun day. What a fun day it turned out to be. After five holes I was riding the course and asked John how he was doing to my surprise he said great that he loved the clubs and the new Callaway golf balls I gave him. When all the scores were posted John laughed as he realized he had won the tournament and also had won a closest to the pin. (The first victory ever on tour with a set of rental clubs)! John Loves 80 was 4 shots better than the second place finisher Jim Taylor who was looking for his third victory in a row at Rock Barn dating back to the 2008 season. Don Russell also shot 84 and finished in third place while Dave Courtright rounded out the top four spots with 85. John my only question now is. Are you going to buy that rental set!!!!! C Flight: Larry Hinson won for the second time this season being the only C flighters to break 90 on the day. Larry fired an 88 and beat out three other players by 2 shots for the victory. Joe Lee, Jeff Davidson and newcomer Phillip Kandel all finished tied at 90. Joe Lee beat them all out on the card playoff for second place and Jeff Davidson nipped out Kandel for third place money.
